NAVIGATING YOUR HONEYMOON PLANNING: WHEN AND HOW TO PLAN YOUR DREAM GETAWAY

If you've been together long enough to tie the knot, chances are you've taken trips together before. But if your honeymoon feels different from previous vacations, you're not mistaken.

The biggest difference? You're not just planning a trip—you're also planning a wedding, which can be incredibly stressful. Plus, your honeymoon is likely the most expensive trip you'll take together, adding pressure to get it just right. The key to ensuring your first getaway as a married couple is unforgettable? Planning ahead. Way ahead.

But fear not! By hitting some key milestones, you can make your honeymoon planning much more joyful than stressful. So let's dive into everything you need to know about when and how to plan your dream honeymoon.

WHEN TO START PLANNING YOUR HONEYMOON

For many couples, the honeymoon is the ultimate reward after the marathon of wedding planning. While it may seem early to plan your trip while still planning your wedding, it's actually the perfect time—especially if you're undecided on where to go. Start planning your honeymoon eight to twelve months in advance to allow ample time for choosing a destination, booking travel and accommodations, and coordinating with any travel agents.

DECIDING WHERE TO GO

With the whole world at your fingertips, choosing a destination can be daunting. We recommend selecting a place neither of you has been to before so that you can make new memories, and plan activities you both enjoy. Whether you're seeking relaxation or adventure, there's a perfect spot out there.

Consider your timing carefully. European coastal spots may be closed during off-seasons, avoid monsoon seasons and be mindful of any annual events that may affect your trip.

If you’re thinking about a multi-destination honeymoon? Spend at least three nights in each location and plan your itinerary to maximise enjoyment. And don't forget to end your trip with some relaxation before heading home.

WHEN TO BOOK

The travel industry has been experiencing a year-on-year boom since the end of the pandemic. For this reason we suggest booking your honeymoon as soon as possible. For sought-after international destinations like Santorini or the Amalfi Coast, it's wise to secure bookings at least six months ahead. Safaris and yacht or sailing charters should be arranged even earlier, ideally eight to 12 months in advance. Domestic getaways in well-established tourist spots with activities sometimes require less planning however, to secure the best accommodation during peak seasons, it's still advisable to book at least five to six months ahead.

The most budget-friendly rooms and specialty suites—such as those with dedicated honeymoon suites or private plunge pools—tend to be the first to fill up, so booking early helps avoid disappointment. Fortunately, hotels typically release pricing and availability around eight to 12 months ahead, while flights become available around 10 months in advance. It pays to book early.

When it comes to snagging the best flight and hotel deals, there's a lot of advice out there, but the most effective way to save money is to stay flexible with your travel dates and destination.

CONSIDER HIRING A PRIVATE TRAVEL AGENT

Investing in a travel agent can offer immediate benefits. They can assist you in selecting the ideal honeymoon destination within your budget and curate an itinerary featuring excellent accommodations and activities—tasks that could take you weeks to research and arrange independently. Moreover, travel agents prove invaluable for less obvious reasons. They maintain great relationships with hotels and airlines to ensure their clients receive VIP treatment and are first in line for upgrades.

In conclusion, planning your honeymoon is an exciting time that requires careful consideration and preparation. By starting your planning process well in advance, researching destinations, staying flexible with dates and locations, and considering the benefits of hiring a travel agent, you can ensure that your first getaway as a married couple is nothing short of magical. With the right approach and attention to detail, your honeymoon will be a cherished and unforgettable experience that sets the tone for a lifetime of adventures together.
