5 ways to elevate florals on your wedding invitations

Floral weddings, although always in fashion, are forever changing and evolving. Traditional looks always brought larger floral elements and fancy fonts, whereas today Brides and Grooms are seeking a more refined floral look or even patterned designs.

With this in mind, choosing the style of florals you love on your stationery can be a tedious task, and with there being so many options, can become a little overwhelming. But considering this together with font styles and layouts, can make it a little easier to choose your desired look.

Whether you love oversized florals, wildflowers, or even simple single flower looks, this blog will show you how to elevate your stationery florals and make your wedding invitations stand out from the crowd.

Let’s get to it…

1. Don’t be afraid to go big

Many people shy away from larger florals because they don’t want to make a design too busy, but done purposefull with confidence this can change a design completely. Goin for larger florals not only gives a more natural look, it also adds inquisite detail (with the right florals), and makes a design look luxurious and expensive.

You can choose to draw the eye centrally and have them coming in from an edge, or opt for large florals from the corners. Either way, this is sure to have a huge impact.

With larger florals, remember to keep text to a minimum to allow space and avoid making things too busy, and keep text smaller for elegance.

2. Add colour

Colour is the key with florals, whilst flower outlines can look super classy, to make your design stand out you really want a pop of colour. Whether it be pastel tones or bright summer florals, make sure there’s a mix of tones to add a natural floral beauty and to give depth to the flowers.

Make sure to choose colours that complement your wedding look, i.e the colours you plan to include on your wedding day in the room and your wedding floral displays, you can always have different versions of the same flowers across your invitation inserts, this keeps them consistent but gives each card a slightly different look so it’s not just a rinse and repeat scenario.

Lastly, when it comes to colour, choose cardstocks that are going to bring out the best colour. If you’re wanting bright vivid impact, opt for silks or uncoated card and as close to white as possible. If you’re wanting a more romantic, faded look, consider textures or off-whites/ivories to add warmth and tone down the colours slightly.

3. Repeat for full impact

Don’t be scared to repeat the florals. I see this time and time again where there are beautiful florals on an invitation but the inserts are just plain! Make the most of the florals and add them across your inserts. If you don’t want them to look identical, play around with placement, maybe opt for them in the corner of one, another corner of another and then a smaller central floral on another.

Repeating the florals gives them a confident radiance, and completes your stationery set. Adding the same florals to your inserts will make the whole set sing in harmony and bring your wedding look together, whilst adding that wow factor. It shows that you’ve really thought about the finer details and that’s what takes your design from just nice to luxury.

4. Add dimension

Adding dimension and layers can really help elevate your florals to the next level when it comes to your stationery. Of course florals look beautiful printed onto a flat invitation, but by adding a second layer, fold or embellishment, we can add depth and create a beautifully intricate design.

Consider adding folds to reveal florals, for example a gatefold with floral outer cover revealing beautiful flowers in the middle. This gives a wow impression and adds a little excitement for guests. You could also trail florals down concertinas or cross inserts in pockets to make a cascading effect. This will bring a natural look with a romantic vibe.

Another option is to add dried/artificial florals, of course we can’t add real florals as lovely as that would be (but your invitation wouldn’t last too long!). Dried florals are always my preferred because they are a lot more natural and the colours tend to be softer, this gives an instant classy look to any design.

When choosing your flowers go for a flower that’s in your actual wedding bouquet where possible, this means that all of your stationery will tie in beautifully with your wedding day look. Alternatively, opt for something like gyp, pampas or greenery, these will complement most wedding styles and add a gentle prettiness to your invitations. Dried florals will always add elegance to a design and created a lovely finishing touch. Again it’s about those finer details that give the luxury feel and create a wow factor for your guests.

Lastly, consider adding effects like embossing or laser-cutting, this is a sure way to add dimension and depth without making things too busy.

5. Think about the finer details

Like dried florals, there are lots of ways to enhance your floral look to add that finishing touch. Consider things like wax seals (there are oodles of lovely floral stamps!) or printed bands with extra floral detailing, this will add layering but also add a beautiful finish to any invite. Or you could opt for floral lined envelopes, this instantly adds value to any design and looks like you’ve really gone all out, but actually isn’t too pricey. When your guests open that envelope there is a theatrical element to revealing floral liner and then more beauty with your matching floral invitation.

You could also consider additions such as flower charms to hang from ribbons, floral vellum sleeves or maybe even add floral printed envelopes to really make your design pop.

Whatever you choose, make sure you keep your floral look consistent, natural and of course classy.
